Capt. Jeff A. Northrop,
considered by many as the man who pioneered Northeast saltwater flats fishing,
has been stalking the Northern shallows for the past 32 years. Capt. Jeff
is credited with introducing the Northeast to "flats style flyfishing and
flats boats", "and is the primary catalyst in firing the recent excitement
in saltwater flyfishing in these latitudes".(Jerry Gibbs, editor Outdoor
Life).
Northrop opened the first flats boat dealership North of Florida in 1987 at his location in Westport, Connecticut. His pioneering use of these shallow water skiffs in the Northeast opened up a flats fishery that had been literally ignored. |

Northrop has spent
the past 38 years fishing the "Legendary Norwalk Islands: and promoting
the sport of saltwater flyfishing from his home base in Westport, Connecticut.
There are now over 500 Hewes, Maverick, and Pathfinder skiffs plying the
northern flats. The Northeast Women's Saltwater Flyfishing Tournament, and the Northeast Hewes/ Maverick Owner's Tournament, started by Northrop were the first organized "release tournaments" in the Northeast. |
Capt. Jeff was the
first guide in the Northeast to be endorsed by the Orvis Co. of Manchester,
Vt., and was most recently recognized in "Flyfishing in Saltwaters" Magazine
by Tim Jones as a "Master Guide".
Northrop has been featured in numerous publications, including; Business Week, the New York Times, Outdoor Life, Saltwater Sportsmen, Sport Fishing, Flyfishing in Saltwaters, Boating Industry, New York Outdoors, the Angling Report, and in the book "Striped Bass Fishing" by Richard Reina and Pete Barrett. In 1999 Northrop was featured on MSG Metro Guide, ABC-TV will Bill Elliot and Barbara Walters, and the "Fishing Zone" with Steven Sloan. Northrop's roll as a FFF certified casting instructor has landed him the honor of tesching such celebrities as Martha Stewart, and Paul Newman the fine points of saltwater flyfishing. |
Northrop's second
video "Northeast Saltwater Flyfishing", has been hailed as "the definitive
primer on flyfishing in saltwater" by Dean Travis Clarke, editor, Sportfishing
Magazine.
Currently Northrop can be seen Nationally on the "Outdoor Life Network" with his "Tips from the Pro's". Capt. Jeff has held a Masters License from the U.S. Coast Guard since 1978, and has been an Advisor/Consultant to the Maritime industry, in both the private and government sectors since 1977. |
